Katazome Experiment

September 15th

I have been failing with Katazome and fermentation indigo vat. It is very different from the iron sulfate vat I worked at the Zeugfärberei for the Indigo Hyphae project before.

Here, I first made the pattern sketch on a paper, traced cutting lines to a tracing paper, then using carbon copy paper, I copied the pattern to a katazome stencil paper. Then I cut off what needs to be printed with design cutter. Then printed katanori on a scoured cotton fabric.

The paste is dried for few days, then dye process starts. I dipped 3min in, then at least 5min outside (sometimes much longer) and repeated the dip for 6 times. I was afraid that the resist paste will come out, but actually it was quite stable. Probably it could hold another few dips.

Afterwards, I washed the fabric in warm/cold water.

I am quite happy with the outcome. The pattern looks very crisp, details did not get lost and blue part is quite blue.
